About

Commissioned in 2009 by the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia and Leah Stein Dance Company for performance in an old Armory, battle hymns is a large-scale meditation on war based on Civil War texts for a cappella chorus and solo snare drum. Written by brilliant contemporary composer and Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang, this profoundly moving performance piece will draw you in with its poetry and visual effect. Hangar 3 on the Intrepid, a former WWII aircraft carrier, will make for a fresh, contemplative setting for the New York premiere of this provocative piece.

This concert is dedicated to a beloved and faithful member of The Collegiate Chorale who passed away recently, Elena Lowenfeld.

reviews of BATTLE HYMNS

“The Intrepid may not seem like an ideal choice for a mostly a cappella choral work, but with clever sound engineering and leadership of conductor James Bagwell, the performance proved to be a unique and successful one.” – Superconductor “The audience, surrounded by the Hangar Deck of the Intrepid and the voices cannot help but feel the authenticity and palpable emotion of anyone who has been touched by war.” -  Electronic Link (ELJ)
