About

When Orphic Moments premiered at National Sawdust in 2016, the rave New York Times review ended with a lament: “Why does it run for just two consecutive evenings, and for fewer than 300 people?” We felt the same way! This inventive evening pairs a new dramatic cantata, The Orphic Moment, by young composer Matthew Aucoin, with an innovative staging of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, in a version specially re-conceived for MasterVoices. The effect is a provocative probing of the psychology of Orpheus’ crucial turning point, directed by Zack Winokur with scenic design by Douglas Fitch, featuring countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, soprano Kiera Duffy, soprano Lauren Snouffer, dancer Bobbi Jene Smith, and violinist Keir GoGwilt. Don’t miss this unforgettable evening that brings new insight to a classic tale!

READ REVIEWS FROM Orphic Moments
"Under Sperling’s sensitive, flexible direction, MasterVoices produced the glowing, highly musical performance that one has come to expect from them and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s played very well. " "Orphic Moments is worthy of high praise for its creative energy and artistic industry. It is a vital, original take on a timeless story." - Opera News  “MasterVoices provides what its name implies, and does so with resonance and clarity on stage where their smoothly blocked scenes add an element of grandeur. When placed in the three tiers above the stage at the Rose Theater, they sound and look impressive as vocal and visual architecture. During that time MasterVoices is an audience that is visible to us. This suggests that we are watching an opera within an opera, an indication that something unusual might happen, which, of course, it does.” – Schmopera “Whoever is responsible for this choice by Master Voices will hopefully be involved in future decisions, because this unconventional choral presentation was terrific.” – Berkshire Fine ArtsThe New York Times lamented that the initial 2016 engagement at National Sawdust in Brooklyn was only offered twice; I now similarly join in lamenting that this presentation of “Orphic Moments” by MasterVoices only received two performances.  Hopefully, an encore will follow.” – Stage Left
